The Internet Era: Where Will Knowledge Copyright Go?

Preface#

With the rapid development and popularization of the internet, the ways in which knowledge, information, and content are disseminated are undergoing profound changes. This transformation not only poses new challenges and issues for knowledge copyright but also provides unprecedented opportunities for the dissemination and sharing of knowledge. Against this backdrop, the rise of artificial intelligence has become a focal point for creators and intellectual property holders. However, while artificial intelligence has its unique advantages and application prospects, it also faces certain limitations and challenges. This article will begin with artificial intelligence, leading to the solutions and applications of Story Protocol.

Opportunities in the Age of Artificial Intelligence#

Creative and Design Applications of Generative AI#

Generative AI, such as Midjourney, utilizes advanced algorithms and models to generate images and designs that meet expectations based on user descriptions. Here are some specific application scenarios:

  • Personalized Design and Creative Generation: Generative AI can quickly generate images, illustrations, or designs that meet expectations based on user descriptions and needs, greatly improving the efficiency and quality of personalized design.

  • Artistic Creation and Innovation: Artists and designers can use generative AI for artistic creation, exploring and experimenting with new artistic styles and forms of expression.

  • Product Design and Simulation: In the product design and development process, generative AI can assist designers and engineers in quickly generating and simulating product design schemes and effects, accelerating the product development cycle.

Document Processing and Creation with Text-based AI#

Text-based AI, such as ChatGPT-4.0, has powerful natural language processing capabilities and can derive, adapt, and summarize based on user-provided documents, significantly improving the efficiency and quality of document processing and creation. Here are some specific application scenarios:

  • Document Derivation and Adaptation: Text-based AI can generate new content and versions based on existing documents and materials, providing creators with more inspiration and options.

  • Document Summarization and Extraction: When processing large amounts of documents and materials, text-based AI can automatically summarize and extract key information and viewpoints, helping users quickly acquire and understand content.

  • Writing Assistant and Editing Tools: Text-based AI can serve as a writing assistant and editing tool, providing writing suggestions, grammar checks, and content optimization functions, helping users improve writing quality and efficiency.

Challenges in the Age of Artificial Intelligence#

With the rapid development and popularization of artificial intelligence technology, especially the widespread application of generative AI in creative and design fields, intellectual property issues have become increasingly prominent. The production capacity of AI is influenced by large models, and there are many similar or identical AI models on the market, which poses serious challenges to creators' intellectual property.

Issues of AI Model Sharing and Theft#

  • Model Theft and Reuse: Due to the presence of many identical or similar AI models in the market, models generated by creators can easily be stolen or reused by others. For example, a creator A generates a work on a certain platform, which is converted into an NFT and uploaded to OpenSea, then purchased by user B and sold at a higher price on OpenSea. At this point, user C may take a screenshot of that NFT and mint it as their own NFT, which severely infringes on the creator's intellectual property.

NFT and Intellectual Property Protection#

  • Authenticity and Uniqueness of NFTs: Although NFT technology can provide unique identity and ownership proof for digital artworks, there are still issues of NFTs being copied, forged, or stolen in practical applications. Ensuring the authenticity and uniqueness of NFTs, as well as effectively protecting creators' intellectual property, is an urgent problem that needs to be addressed.

These are the issues we are experiencing in the internet age. So how can we solve this problem?

Blockchain technology may be the best solution to this problem. Due to its characteristics of decentralization, immutability, and transparency, blockchain technology can provide a more secure, transparent, and reliable protection mechanism for intellectual property.

Story Protocol may become the ultimate weapon to solve this problem#

The Programmable IP layer built for the age of AI

So what is Programmable IP?

  • Register an ERC-721 NFT as an IP Asset

  • Each IP asset is also associated with an ERC-6551 Token Bound Account -- IPA (IP Account)

image

Is Story Protocol just this? Not at all; it is far more than that.

It is also divided into three modules

  1. Licensing Module: Facilitates easy adaptation of IP

  2. Royalty Module: Automates capital benefit sharing

  3. Dispute Module: Allows for appeals on infringing assets

I believe you have read my previous article, thus gaining a basic understanding of Story Protocol. I will not elaborate further here. In this article, I will specifically explore its use cases.

I hope to provide some inspiration for developers!

The following is for reference only; specific use cases will be available upon the launch of the testnet!

Use Cases#

One-stop Service

Currently, SP only supports registering existing NFTs as IPA on the development network and does not allow for directly "one-stop" minting of NFTs and registering IPA.

This one-stop service may be supported in the future.

Enterprise-level IP

Registering a single NFT clearly does not meet the needs of large clients. Here is a comparison of the registration process:

  1. Individual IP Registration

    1. Contract Address

    2. Token ID

  2. Company IP Registration

    1. Contract Address

We can clearly see that individual IP registration requires providing a Token ID, and individuals generally do not spend time or have the technical ability to create a separate contract for their IP. This could expose individuals' IP to risks. While individuals may not care, large companies certainly will not.

Thus, enterprise-level IP registration has become a solution to this issue, allowing companies to easily create their own smart contracts and register them as IPA, and all NFTs under this contract belong to the company's IP assets.

The benefits of this are also reflected in the dispute module. Using this model, SP can easily handle IP disputes between large clients, reducing arbitration costs.

Of course, the above is just my personal opinion, and we still need to wait for the product to go live.
